European Club Matches: August 26, 2007

EPL

Manchester United 1 – Tottenham 0: Nani scored a scorcher to put Manchester Utd. up on the scorebaord. Tottenham had chances from Berbatov, but could not put one in the back of the net.

Middlesbrough 2 – Newcastle 2:  N’Zogbia scored the first one for Newcastle, while Mido equalized for Middlesbrough to make it 1-1.  Australian’s Viduka gave Newcastle the lead again, but Arca made sure each team received 1 point.

Serie A

AC Milan 3 – Genoa 0:  European champion AC Milan won 3-0 at Genoa as the title favorites opened the Italian league season Sunday.  Kaka scored twice and Massimo Ambrosini added another as AC Milan cruised against Genoa, which returned to Serie A after a 12-season absence.

Inter Milan 1 – Udinese 1: Inter defender Ivan Cordoba headed the ball into his own net following an Udinese corner kick in second-half injury time. Dejan Stankovic put Inter ahead 9 minutes in, but Inter was reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper Julio Cesar was sent off for a handball outside the area in the 56th.

Palermo 0 – AS Roma 2:  Rossi opened scoring with Roma’s first, and Aquilani scored a fantastic goal to give Roma the deserved 3 points.

Fiorentina 3 – Empoli 1:    Fiorentina beat Empoli in a Tuscan derby with goals from Gianpaolo Pazzini, Adrian Mutu and Riccardo Montolivo.

La Liga

Racing Santander 0 – FC Barcelona 0: The “Fantastic Four” were pretty quiet against 10-man Racing Santander on Sunday in the first round of the Spanish first division.

Villareal 3 - Valencia 0: American-born striker Giusepe Rossi converted a penalty while Jon Dahl Tomasson and Santiago Cazorla added the others to lead Villarreal over 10-man Valencia at the Mestalla stadium.

Wolfsburg 1 – Schalke 1: Halil Altintop scored in the 86th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw for Schalke against 10-man VfL Wolfsburg in the German first division on Sunday.

Lyon 1 – Saint-Etienne 0: Six-time defending champion Lyon ended its two-game losing streak in French league Sunday, beating Saint-Etienne 1-0 by a rebound goal from Karim Benzema early in the second half.
